Vince Gill’s defiant reaction to being asked not to sing about Jesus
Vince Gill, a prominent country music artist, has released over 20 albums and garnered numerous awards, including more Grammy Awards than any other male country performer. He first gained recognition in 1979 as a member of the country rock band Pure Prairie League and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
Forty years later, Gill remains a sought-after musician, recently sharing the Grand Ole Opry stage with Little Big Town. During one such performance, Gill, a devout Christian, faced a challenge due to a prohibition on singing religious music, particularly songs referencing Jesus.
Undeterred, Gill chose to defy the restriction creatively. Instead of abandoning his faith, he performed “Why Me Lord,” a poignant song written by Kris Kristofferson in 1972 and famously covered by Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. His rendition was met with a standing ovation, demonstrating the power of his performance and his commitment to his beliefs and artistic integrity.
Gill’s unwavering dedication to his faith and music is a testament to his rightful place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Witness his moving performance of “Why Me Lord” at this link.
